Wednesday 20110202 Bringing the Pink

Sara

In anticipation of the Valentine's Day show at Location 1980, I decided to Bring the Pink. I drove up to the Art Supply Warehouse on Tuesday, looking for a dark pink and light pink marker to use. I've never really been a marker person (except for the drawing I won first prize for in Kindergarten,) but I decided it would be something I could use on my bristol board. My preferred choice would have been watercolors, but the bristol board doesn't hold up against all but the lightest of washes. I decided to buy copics, since it had percolated into my brain that they were the best. After trying out an insane number of similar pinks I bought the light pink RV21 (hightlighter pink) and the manly named baby blossom RV95 (slighty greyish purple.)

The pink didn't scan or photograph very well, so I color corrected using Gimp. The pink now looks correct, but the purples are a little too red compared to the originals.

Had live music this night. During the warm-up, I was trying to figure out what to use these two markers for. Using them in equal amounts wasn't really working, so I decided to use the pink as my mid tone and the purple as an accent color or to fill in my black shadows.

From Hymm Art
This is a continuation of the quick sketches I did of Jake before. The high contrast, heavy shadows. And a bit of continuation of a week ago of showing the brush marks to create a mid-tone. I circled to room looking for a more interesting angle of this post, but settled on where I was originally sitting because of the overall simple shape of the body, but there were interesting shadows on her back. I think this turned out really good, but at the end of the pose I felt it would have been even better if I had a better understanding of anatomy. Specifically the shape of the trapezius and lattisimus dorsi.
I also looked for a more interesting view of this pose, but decided I had done too many side views of this chair already. I exaggerated the size of the feet a little in this one, and really focused on giving detail to the shoes. It turned out ok, but I think it was more interesting with just the purple. When I added the pink in, it made the pose a little more indistinct. Originally the purple of the shoes and hat, really brought focus to the illustration.

Being back in natural light was nice. There was light from the left coming from a bank of windows near the ceiling and light coming from windows coming from the doorway on the far right.

No under drawing on this one. Tried to paint just the core shadows and a light outline on the darker side of the body. Will need to try this out again at the next Sunday I go to.

From Hymm Art
I like how the left had feels in this one. Tried lots of little brush marks to define the shadows in this one. Looks ok, but I like the more delibrate longer marks better.

From Hymm Art
Messed up the left foot in this one. I couldn't see it from my position, but the way I drew it, it should be visible. If I ever pull out this drawing again, I'll have to add it in. Back to trying to create shape with the brush marks, but leaving a hint of the brush marks on the edges to try and soften the edges of the shadows.

From Hymm Art
My favorite from this session. Captured the feel of the pose well. I think I went into this one trying to be less 100% faithful to what my eye was seeing and exaggerating the twist a little.

From Hymm Art
A less naked pose, gave me a chance to try something else out. Tried to just define the chair and her clothes. I also wanted to capture the expression she had on her face, but I struggled too much. She had a nice seductive look, that I just could not capture. Erased the face many times, and finally erased most of it one last time. Ugh, lazy artists.

20110126 - Meetup Brooke

Brooke the Younger

Still working on one drawing that isn't posted. It's an extension on the interesting failure from last week. It's turned into an interesting failure of it's own, but I think it's still possible to save it. I've been looking to the four tonal compositions for guidance on how to save it. I need to decide if I'm going to use black, white and dark grey on a light grey background or black, white, and light grey on a dark grey background.

This week I also decided to pull out the kuretake brusables markers. I was trying to create shadows using the brush strokes of my pen brush, leaving the impression on the strokes. Instead of trying to create solid shapes of the shadows.

A couple of the quick 3 minuters from warmup. Some interesting things going on here. It was a fight balacing making confident strokes without being messy. Of the ones I didn't post I either didn't define the shadows well enough or got a little too messy layering brush strokes on top of each other. Love how the core shadow was defined on the back of the leg on the second pic.

From Hymm Art
I liked how this one turned out. The background was finished with sumi ink and the warm grey is a nice contrast to the cool grey on the body. I like how most of the brush strokes of the shadows are still well defined. Inside of the black shadows I initially was trying to use the same strokey-ness of the black, but it ended up looking messy. It was more effective to just fill the spaces in between the black strokes with the midtone.

From Hymm Art
My brush strokes on this one turned too scribbly. I tried to hide that a bit by filling in the midtones. The shadow on the stomach from the leg was filled in too much (too dark.) I tried to lighted it up with some white ink, but it doesn't quite fit in.

The last part of the session, returned to quick 5 minute poses. I decided to try a minimalist style and see if I could do anything interesting. Turned out ok, but will need to try more in the future to perfect.

January 19th meetup

Model was Annisa this night.

Had an interesting failure from this night. Instead of outlining the figure I tried to hatch the background with pen. This had an interesting effect. Unfortunately I over used cross hatching on the interior of the figure. Cross hatching on the human form should be used sparingly as it can close the shadows and creates hard edges. Single hatching expresses the soft edges of the shadows on the form better.
My pen brush was running out of ink on this one. Tried a slightly messing shading method. At the end of the day I'm not a fan of being this messy. It tends towards sloppy and careless. I had a bit of foreshortening on this pose at was only somewhat successful in capturing it.

From Hymm Art

Like how the purse turned out on this one. The face was a good resemblance, but the shadows on the back and arm were a bit too light originally. I tried to darked them a bit, but it ended up looking too sloppy. Hard to tell in this picture, but in person I didn't like the effect.

Location 1980 January 12th

Model was Toni.
From Hymm Art
This was a 5 minuter. Had a few others and this was the best. It ended up with a good 3D feel to the pose.

From Hymm Art
15 min. pose. The scribbles in this drawing and the next are pieces of tumble weed.

15 min. pose.
From Hymm Art
15 min pose. I did the initial sketch in the studio, but finished from a photo ref. Pose of the head was a little different from the photo ref, so I tried to work a little from imagination. Face doesn't really resemble the model. I was trying to capture a sultry look that was sometimes on her face while she was posing, but I think the eyes should have been more hooded.

Location 1980 Meetup August to January 5th

On my return to going to oc meetup, I continued with trying to learn to do pen drawings.

This is one of my first attempts at a doing the undraped figure in pen. I really like how the portrait ended up and haven't really duplicated the same shading since.
From Hymm Art

An attempt to use the same shading as above. The face wasn't as heavily shadowed. I found the speed of the pen across the paper really altered the quality of the line. I can very easily move the pen faster than the ink can flow to create a nice even line. Using this I can vary the width of the line a bit.
From Hymm Art

Sort of got three different styles of drawing on this page. The top two drawings are done with my brush pen. I like the expression I managed to capture on the portrait.
From Hymm Art

I think this was a 15 minuter. I like how the shading turned out on this one. Moved the pen fairly fast for the shading.
From Hymm Art

Starting to find a couple more tones. Wish I had taked a reference photo for this one, so I could finish the hair
From Hymm Art

This is a fairly small drawing. Only used a quick sketch. This was another 15er. Like how the shading worked on this one.
From Hymm Art

The first one I finished from reference. I think this was an hour pose. I like how the shading came out in the middle, but am not sure about the unity of the whole pic. Hair probably needs shading.
From Hymm Art

Really like how this one turned out. A lot of people that night had some nice drawings of this pose. I think I would have toned the face differently if I did it again. Maybe just lighter.
From Hymm Art

I like the shading on the left boot.
From Hymm Art

I like the expression here. Decided to use only two tones for flesh. I didn't get a photo ref, so I didn't really finish the arm.
From Hymm Art
Same night as above. Finished with a G nib instead of the Sakura pigmas. Has a more organic feel because of it.
From Hymm Art

Really like how this one turned out.
From Hymm Art

Night was too cold for undraped. I also forgot my camera to take photo refs, so I mostly finished these on site.

Next three are 5 min. sketches. Somehow they turned out pretty interestingly. I'm not sure how much was me and how much was the model. Will try to use the brush pen more on the quick poses.

More Sketchbook drawings

I'm really starting to get a handle on how to shade with these pen drawings.
